NEWSPAPER INFORMATION

EVENT TEXT: WILSHIRE ITEMS
From our Own Correspondent
Business has not been quite so brisk in the past day or two, on account
of
the cold snap and heavy snow storms.
The health of the people of this place and vicinity is considerably
better
than it was some time ago, but with all that, death has separated from
us
one of our old pioneer citizens, by the name of Joseph Troutner, who
has
stood the trials and storms of this world for many years. My. Troutner,
as
we understand was between seventy and eighty years of age, and was a
quiet
and peaceable citizen. We have no doubt but that he now rests in a
world
of joy.
James PHILBEE, the oldest citizen of our
village, is very much afflicted
with rheumatics. Mr. Philbee has been a very stout man in his time, but
those
days now leave him passed over, and he now feels the effects of hard
labor
in the past. Mr. Philbee, together with his aged wife, are good
citizens
and are both respected by all their neighbors, and we do think that the
citizens
should be careful and not let them come to want in their old days.
DEATH and BURIAL INFORMATION
James died 2 Aug 1875 Van Wert County, Ohio,
at 85 years of age.

Notes for
Charles Curtis Chilcoat:
Charles
Curtis Chilcoat was born in Huntingdon
County, probably in Springfield Township, Pennsylvania. He never knew
his father,
presumed to be Nicodemus Chilcote who died prior to 1820. One
researcher reported that Nicodemus was crippled in some fashion. In a
biographical sketch of Charles Curtis Chilcote, it does state that
his grandfather was Robinson Chilcote. It is believed that Charles'
mother's name was Sarah, but there is no proof of this at this
time. (1990)
Based on
his Obituary his birthdate would be 6 Jan 1819. Have also seen 16 Jan

Obituary
Charley
Chilcoat was born in Pennsylvania in January 1819, and
died at his residence in Willshire, Ohio, December 14, 1896, age 77
years,
11months, and 8 days. Mr Chilcoat was married to Catherine Philley
(sic) in 1840, to
this union were born six children, three sons and
three daughters all of whom are grown to man and womanhood and survive
theirfather. There were ten children in the old Chilcoat family (the
old race) six boys and four girls all of them are now deceased.
Charley being the last one. Mr. Chilcoat joined the M.E. church and has
been a faithful member for fifty-eight years, and served part of that
time as class leader. He removed from Licking County, Ohio to Van Wert
County, Ohio in 1852, in which he resided ever since. Funeral services
were held at the M.E. church in Willshire by Rev. Clemens, from the
book of the Philippians, First Chapter, Verse 23, on December 17, 1896
after which the remains were taken four miles northeast of Willshire
for interment, followed by a host of relatives and friends.

OBITUARY
Charles C.
Chilcoat departed this life in Wilshire, Van Wert,
Ohio,December 14, 1896. He was one of the old pioneers of
Wilshiretownship,
and a long subscriber to THE BULLETIN.He was born in the State of
Pennsylvania in the year 1819. He
departed this life at the ripe age of 77 years, 11 months and 8 days.
At
the age of six years, he moved with his mother, then a widow, to
Licking County, Ohio, and there grew up in manhood. At the age of 19
years, he was happily converted to God and united with the M.E. Church,
and for fifty-six years stood visibly
connected with the same, and a good portion of this time he held
official relations with the church as leader, steward, and trustee.
He joined
in marriage to his now bereaved companion, in the year
1840, who has been a great help to him in his religious life for 56
years, they have walked together side by side, in the sunshine and the
shadow of life's experiences. Their home has always been a home of
prayer. They came to Van Wert county and settled here in Wilshire
township
in the year 1852. This county was comparatively new. Their home was
always a welcome one to the intinerant preachers in all these
years.
They have
been associated with religious interests of this charge,
and the social life of the community, through all these years.
Thirteen years ago they moved to the Village of Wilshire and stood
connected with the society of this place, always at their places in the
church when able to attend.
Six
children have been the fruit of this marriage, three boys and three
girls and a remarkable providence is they live to see them
all settled in life, without the loss of one. A few days before
Brother. Chilcoat's death we had the pleasure of seeing them all
gathered
at the parental home, the first time in twenty years. by his request
they all stood in a line in the room according to their
respective ages
and then he requested them to join in singing "Praise God From
Whom All Blessings Flow." It
was truly an affecting scene as might be expected, as the end drew nigh
he was ready. He led in family prayers and grace at the table as long
as he was able.
He died
with heart failure, sitting in a chair with his companion
and myself by his side, perfectly rational . He passed so easy away on
the wing of an expiring breath that the family hardly realized that the
stroke of death was upon him. While we deeply sympathize with his
lonely companion and children in this, their irreparable loss, we
are glad to know that they sorrow not as those that have no hope, for
if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even them also, which
sleep in Jesus, will God bring with Him. The writer endeavored to
improve upon the sad occasion to a large congregation of friends in
church
at
Wilshire,
from Phil. 1:2-3. Half at least of the large
congregation were relatives of the deceased, after which his body was
taken and laid away to rest in the cemetery at Fletcher Chapel, near
his old farm, beside his friends, he being the last of the old Chilcoat
brothers. Until the resurrection of the just may the Lord bless
and sustain his dear aged companion, in these, her declining years,
and bring them all to the eternal reunion of the blessed immortal
companionship that has no ending, or vicissitudes of changes to
mar conscious social existence.
